Record Set : August 1995 - Warmest month on record
A remarkably fine summer. August was the warmest month ever recorded in Kilkenny. In that remarkable month the average maximum temperature for each day was over 25° C (mean max temp of 25.4° C, to be precise). It felt positively Mediterranean. The highest daily temperature recorded during the month was 30.8° C on the 2nd August.
Oddly enough exactly 1 week later on the 9th, there was a ground frost, –0.6° C. This was due to the fact that the month was also very dry with only 6.5mm of rainfall being recorded the entire month. When the soil is dry it also has a tendency to lose (radiate) its heat more readily.
